Questions about couples counseling
What couples often ask before starting, including session structure, cost, partner hesitation, and what to expect.
What is couples counseling?
Couples counseling is therapy where both partners meet with one counselor to work on the relationship itself. Rather than taking sides, your counselor acts as a neutral guide, helping you understand the patterns behind recurring arguments and practice healthier ways to communicate. Couples at any stage can benefit, from newly dating to decades married. Sessions are held at our Dallas office near the Katy Trail or virtually.
Is couples counseling right for us?
If conversations keep turning into the same fight, if trust has been damaged, or if you feel more like roommates than partners, couples counseling can help. It is also a fit for couples doing fine who want to strengthen their connection before a big step like marriage, a move, or starting a family. The main requirement is that both partners are willing to show up and engage. You do not need to wait until things feel broken to come in.
What are the benefits of couples counseling?
Couples counseling helps partners understand the patterns underneath recurring conflict, improve communication, rebuild trust, and feel more connected. At Being Wellness Therapy, couples therapy gives both partners a structured, non-blaming space to talk through what keeps happening and practice healthier ways to repair. It can be helpful if you are navigating frequent arguments, disconnection, trust concerns, premarital conversations, life transitions, or the question of whether the relationship can feel better. If the same issues keep showing up in different forms, our relationship counseling page goes deeper into how we help.
How much does it cost?
Counseling is billed per 50-minute session and ranges from $135 to $175 depending on the counselor you work with. Sliding scale spots are available based on income, though they're limited. Life and career coaching are billed as monthly packages, from $175 to $400 depending on how many sessions you want. You can see every rate on our pricing page, and your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost.
Do you take my insurance?
Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.
How long are couples sessions?
Couples sessions are 50 minutes, the same length as individual sessions. Some couples find a longer or more frequent rhythm helps early on, especially when working through a specific conflict, and your counselor can talk through options if that's the case. You'll settle on a pace together based on what the two of you are working on.
Can I do this virtually, or do I have to come in?
Both options are available. You can meet in person at our office on Knox Street in Dallas or by secure video from anywhere in Texas. Many clients mix the two, coming in some weeks and meeting virtually when travel, weather, or a busy schedule makes it easier. Your counselor can help you decide what works best.
What if my partner doesn't want to come?
That's common, and it doesn't have to stop you. Many people start in individual counseling to work on their own part of the relationship, and partners often become more open to joining once they see it's a fair, non-blaming space. We're glad to talk through your situation in a free consultation and suggest a starting point, whether that's couples work, individual counseling, or a mix.
How do I get started?
The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. It's a no-pressure call to talk through what's going on, answer your questions, and make sure you're matched with the right counselor. You can request one through our booking page or by reaching out directly, and we'll help you find a time that works.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes. What you share in session is confidential and protected by law. There are a few narrow exceptions every therapist is required to follow, such as a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your counselor will walk you through these limits at your first session so you know exactly how confidentiality works.
Not sure where to start?
That's exactly what the 15 minutes are for. No pressure, no paperwork. Just a conversation.
