Understanding anger

Anger itself is a normal, useful emotion. It becomes a problem when it arrives faster, hotter, or bigger than the moment calls for, and starts costing you relationships, opportunities, or self-respect.

Often it looks like a short fuse you regret an hour later.

Signs & Symptoms of Anger Management

  • Going from calm to furious with little in between
  • Snapping at the people closest to you
  • Tension in your body most of the day
  • Regret and apology cycles that keep repeating
  • People walking carefully around your moods
  • Anger covering for hurt, stress, or fear underneath

How we help with anger

We start with what your anger is actually responding to, because it is usually protecting something. Then we build real-time skills for the heated moments and address the pressure underneath them, so staying calm stops being a white-knuckle effort.

Approaches we may draw on:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Mindfulness-based approachesMotivational Interviewing

Anger patterns can change. Most people find more space between the trigger and the reaction, and better repair when things slip.

Where to start

Anger work happens in individual counseling, where you'll get underneath the triggers and build steadier responses. If it's showing up most at home, couples counseling can help you both.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

Is anger management about suppressing my anger?

No. Anger is information, and suppressing it usually backfires. The work is hearing what it is responding to and expressing it in ways that do not cost you.

How do I know if I actually have an anger problem?

A useful test: is it costing you things you care about, like relationships, opportunities, or your own self-respect? If yes, or if people around you have started being careful with you, it is worth a conversation.
