Understanding grief

Grief is the natural response to losing someone or something that mattered: a person, a relationship, a job, a version of your life. It moves in waves, not stages, and it rarely follows the timeline anyone expects.

Often it looks like doing fine for days, then being undone by a song, a smell, or a Tuesday.

Signs & Symptoms of Grief & Loss

  • Waves of sadness that arrive without warning
  • Feeling foggy, forgetful, or far away
  • Guilt about what was said or left unsaid
  • Anger that surprises you
  • Avoiding reminders, or holding tightly to them
  • Pressure to be over it by now

How we help with grief

There is no fixing grief, and we will not try to rush yours. We make room for the loss, help you carry it in a way that does not crush you, and walk with you as life slowly takes a new shape around it.

The waves grow gentler. With support, grief becomes something you carry, not something that carries you.

Where to start

Grief work happens in individual counseling, at whatever pace your loss requires. Some clients prefer to take it outside, where Walk & Talk sessions give grief a little air.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I get started?

Book a free 15-minute consult. We will talk through what is going on, answer your questions, and match you with the counselor and format that fit. No paperwork, no obligation.

How do I know if it's too soon or too late to get help for a loss?

In grief support, neither timeline exists. Some people reach out the week of a loss, while others seek help years later when a milestone or memory resurfaces. Whenever you arrive is the right time to process your grief.

Is there a right way to grieve?

No. Grief moves in waves and follows no schedule. Therapy is not about grieving correctly. It is about not doing it alone.

Will counseling make me move on or forget?

No. The goal is not to leave your loss behind. It is to carry it in a way that lets you live alongside it.
