Questions about walk and talk therapy

What people ask about privacy, weather, effectiveness, cost, virtual options, and whether outdoor sessions are a fit.

What is walk and talk therapy?

Walk and talk therapy is a counseling session held outdoors while you walk side by side with your therapist. The conversation is the same clinical work you would do in an office; the setting is what changes. Our Dallas office sits right off the Katy Trail, so sessions take place on the trail at a comfortable pace. Many clients find that movement eases anxiety, makes it easier to open up, and helps thoughts flow more freely.

Is walk and talk therapy right for me?

Walk and talk sessions are a fit if you think better while moving, feel restless or boxed in by a traditional office, or want to pair physical activity with your mental health care. Walking side by side also removes the face-to-face intensity some people find uncomfortable, which can make hard topics easier to start. It works well on its own or mixed with in-office or virtual sessions, and your therapist will talk through privacy considerations of an outdoor setting before you begin.

What are the benefits of walk and talk therapy?

Walk and talk therapy combines the clinical support of counseling with the grounding effects of movement and time outdoors. At Being Wellness Therapy, walk and talk sessions take place near our Knox Street office along the Katy Trail, giving clients a less formal setting for meaningful conversation. Many people find that walking side by side helps ease anxiety, reduce the intensity of face-to-face conversation, and make thoughts feel easier to access. It can be a strong fit for clients who feel restless indoors, think better while moving, or want to integrate physical movement into their mental health care.

How much does it cost?

Counseling is billed per 50-minute session and ranges from $135 to $175 depending on the counselor you work with. Sliding scale spots are available based on income, though they're limited. Life and career coaching are billed as monthly packages, from $175 to $400 depending on how many sessions you want. You can see every rate on our pricing page, and your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Where do walk & talk sessions happen?

Walk and talk sessions take place on the Katy Trail, which runs right alongside our Dallas office on Knox Street. You'll meet your therapist at the office and head out to the trail together, walking at a comfortable, conversational pace. The route and distance are flexible and set by what feels right for you that day, not by hitting any kind of workout goal.

What if the weather is bad?

Dallas weather can be unpredictable, so we keep things flexible. If it's too hot, cold, or rainy to walk comfortably, you can move the same session indoors at our office or switch to secure video, with no penalty for the change. Your therapist will check in ahead of time when the forecast looks rough so you can decide together.

Is walk & talk as effective as traditional therapy?

Yes. The clinical work is the same as a session in our office; only the setting changes. For many people, walking side by side actually makes therapy easier, easing anxiety, taking the pressure off constant eye contact, and helping thoughts flow more freely. It works well on its own or blended with in-office and virtual sessions, and your therapist will make sure the approach fits your goals.

How do I get started?

The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. It's a no-pressure call to talk through what's going on, answer your questions, and make sure you're matched with the right counselor. You can request one through our booking page or by reaching out directly, and we'll help you find a time that works.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. What you share in session is confidential and protected by law. There are a few narrow exceptions every therapist is required to follow, such as a risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, or suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your counselor will walk you through these limits at your first session so you know exactly how confidentiality works.

Not sure where to start?

That's exactly what the 15 minutes are for. No pressure, no paperwork. Just a conversation.
