Understanding anxiety

Anxiety is more than everyday stress. It is persistent worry and fear that can take over your thoughts, your body, and your plans, sometimes arriving as sudden, intense panic that seems to come out of nowhere.

Often it looks like holding it together all day, then lying awake replaying everything at night.

Signs & Symptoms of Anxiety & Panic Attacks

  • Worry that jumps from one thing to the next
  • A racing heart, tight chest, or restless body
  • Trouble sleeping or switching your brain off
  • Avoiding things you used to handle fine
  • Bracing for the worst, even on good days
  • Sudden waves of panic that arrive without warning

How we help with anxiety

We start by mapping what your anxiety is doing: when it shows up, what it tells you, and how your body carries it. Then we work on calming the physical alarm, loosening the thought patterns underneath it, and rebuilding trust that you can handle what comes.

Approaches we may draw on:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)Mindfulness-based approaches

Anxiety is highly treatable. With the right support, the volume comes down, and life gets bigger again.

Where to start

Anxiety is treated through individual counseling, where you and your counselor work on the thought patterns and physical symptoms driving it. Some clients also find that movement helps, which is exactly what Walk & Talk sessions are for.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I get started?

How do I know if my stress is bad enough for professional help?

If anxiety or persistent stress disrupts your sleep, your work, or your daily peace of mind, it is enough. You do not need a clinical diagnosis or a sudden crisis to deserve professional anxiety support.

Can therapy really help with panic attacks?

Yes. Panic responds well to counseling. You will learn what is happening in your body during an attack and practical ways to bring the alarm down. Attacks tend to lose their grip once they stop being a mystery.

What if I have always been an anxious person?

Long-standing anxiety can still change. You may not remember life without it, which is exactly why an outside perspective helps.
