Understanding divorce and breakups

A breakup or divorce is more than the loss of a relationship. It can shake your routines, your finances, your friendships, and your sense of who you are, all at the same time.

Often it looks like functioning fine on the surface while quietly grieving the life you had planned.

Signs & Symptoms of Divorce & Breakups

  • Grief, anger, and relief showing up in the same hour
  • Replaying what happened or what you could have done
  • A daily life that suddenly does not fit
  • Loneliness, even around people
  • Worry about co-parenting, money, or starting over
  • Not quite recognizing yourself right now

How we help with divorce and breakups

We give the loss the room it deserves while helping you find your footing in the practical pieces: the new routines, the co-parenting, the identity that is yours alone. The goal is not just getting through it, but building a next chapter you actually want.

Endings are hard, and they are survivable. Most people come through this stronger and clearer than they expected.

Where to start

Most people navigate a breakup or divorce through individual counseling. If you're still deciding whether to stay, couples counseling can help you figure that out together.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I get started?

Can you help me decide whether to stay or go?

Yes, and we will not push you in either direction. The work is getting clear on what you want and what is driving the doubt, so the decision is actually yours.

How long does it take to get over a divorce or breakup?

There is no standard timeline, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. What we can do is make sure you are moving through it instead of around it.
