Understanding trauma

Trauma is the lasting imprint of an experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope. It can change how safe the world feels, how well you sleep, and how close you let people get, long after the event itself has passed.

Often it looks like being fine for weeks, then blindsided by a memory, a mood, or a reaction you did not choose.

Signs & Symptoms of Trauma

  • Memories or dreams that intrude without warning
  • Staying on guard, even in safe places
  • Avoiding reminders, places, or conversations
  • Feeling numb, distant, or cut off from yourself
  • Being easily startled or quick to overwhelm
  • Difficulty trusting people or letting your guard down

How we help with trauma

Trauma work here is structured and carefully paced. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. We build safety and steadiness first, then process what happened using approaches designed specifically for trauma, so the past can stop running the present.

Approaches we may draw on:

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)Trauma-informed careInternal Family Systems (IFS)

Healing from trauma is possible, and it happens at your pace. The past does not get the final say.

Where to start

Trauma work happens in individual counseling, including EMDR with our trained clinicians. It's structured, paced carefully, and always on your terms.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I get started?

Book a free 15-minute consult. We will talk through what is going on, answer your questions, and match you with the counselor and format that fit. No paperwork, no obligation.

Do I have to talk about the details of what happened?

No. You share what you choose, when you choose. Some of the approaches we use, like EMDR, do not require retelling the details at all.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a structured, well-researched therapy that helps your brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their charge. It involves less talking than traditional therapy and always moves at a pace you can comfortably handle.

How do I know if my past experiences count as trauma?

There is no severity bar you have to clear before you deserve trauma support. If a past experience overwhelmed your ability to cope back then and is still affecting your emotional well-being today, it counts.
