Understanding eating and body image struggles

Struggles with food and body image exist on a spectrum, from constant background noise to patterns that take a real toll on health and daily life. They are rarely about food alone, and they are never a matter of willpower.

Often it looks like thinking about food or your body far more than anyone around you realizes.

Signs & Symptoms of Eating Disorders & Body Image

  • Food choices that feel ruled by anxiety or guilt
  • A running commentary about your body that will not stop
  • Eating that feels secretive, stressful, or out of control
  • Your reflection deciding how the day will go
  • Social plans shaped around food worries
  • Knowing something is off but feeling unable to say it out loud

How we help with eating disorders and body image

We work gently and without judgment on the feelings, beliefs, and pressures underneath the pattern, not just the pattern itself. Where it helps, we coordinate with physicians and dietitians so you are supported on every front.

Approaches we may draw on:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)Mindfulness-based approaches

Recovery is real. A steadier, kinder relationship with food and your body is possible.

Where to start

We work with disordered eating and body image through individual counseling, in a space that's steady, private, and judgment-free.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I know eating and body image counseling is a good fit?

Eating and body image counseling may be a good fit if food, exercise, body image, or control around eating is taking up more mental space than you want. The first step is simply understanding what is happening.

Will you make me change how I eat right away?

No. We move at your pace and start with understanding, not rules. Nothing is imposed on you.

What if I am not sure I am ready to recover?

That is normal, and it is welcome here. Ambivalence is part of this. You do not have to be certain to start the conversation.
