Understanding depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a persistent low mood that can flatten your energy, your sleep, and your interest in the things that used to matter, often for no clear reason.

Often it looks like getting through the day on autopilot, then wondering where your energy went.

Signs & Symptoms of Depression

  • Tired no matter how much you sleep
  • Things you used to enjoy feel flat
  • Trouble focusing or making simple decisions
  • Feeling heavy, slow, or strangely numb
  • Pulling away from the people you care about
  • A harsher, louder inner critic

How we help with depression

We start by understanding what your depression actually feels like and what it is connected to, without rushing you to feel better on a schedule. Together we work on the thoughts, habits, and pressures that keep the low mood in place, and build small, steady steps back toward your life.

Approaches we may draw on:

Depression is treatable. With the right support, most people start to feel more like themselves again, and you do not have to manage it alone.

Where to start

Depression is treated through individual counseling, at a pace that meets you where you are. If getting outside sounds more doable than an office, Walk & Talk sessions are a gentler way in.

Questions, answered

A few of the things people ask before getting started. Anything else? Bring it to your free consultation.

How much does therapy cost?

Sessions are private pay, and current rates are listed on our pricing page. Every counselor on our team also keeps a limited number of sliding-scale spots for clients with financial constraints. Your free consultation is a good time to ask about cost and fit.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, some of our counselors accept Aetna for individual counseling. This currently includes Kristin Smart, Travis Kern, and Raven Lucas. For all other services, Being Wellness Therapy is private pay and out-of-network. We can provide superbills if you'd like to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Aetna coverage applies to individual counseling only; couples counseling and coaching are private-pay.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our team is made up of Licensed Professional Counselors, and counselors do not prescribe medication. If medication could be part of your care, we can coordinate with your physician or psychiatrist, or help you find one.

How long until I start feeling better?

It varies, and anyone who promises a timeline is guessing. Many people notice small shifts within the first several sessions, and your counselor will check in regularly so you always know how things are progressing.

How do I get started?

Book a free 15-minute consult. We will talk through what is going on, answer your questions, and match you with the counselor and format that fit. No paperwork, no obligation.

How do I know if it is depression or just a rough patch?

A rough patch lifts. If the heaviness has lasted weeks, follows you across situations, and does not respond to rest or good news, it is worth talking to someone. The free consult can help you tell the difference.

I'm still functioning, so how do I know if I actually need help?

High functioning and deep suffering can coexist. You don't have to wait until things completely fall apart to seek depression counseling. If you are going through the motions but feeling empty or heavy, that is a valid reason to reach out.

What if I have tried therapy before and it did not help?

A therapy that did not land usually says more about fit than about you. Tell us what did not work, and we will factor it into how we match you.
